Meet the Two Tigers Who Reined as Tiger King & Queen on International Tiger Day at Turpentine Creek: Following a voting competition that lasted nearly the entire month of July, Turpentine Creek Wildlife Refuge's supporters officially elected a Tiger King and Tiger Queen for International World Tiger Day on July 29. The Refuge Royalty contest was held as a fundraiser for TCWR's new well and water system. The Refuge's supporters raised over $4,000 to support the project.
"Game of Thrones" fans everywhere are rejoicing now that Khaleesi, a rare Golden Tabby Tiger, was named Tiger Queen with 461 votes, meaning she raised $461 for the new well and water system project. Khaleesi was rescued from a notorious tiger mill in Colorado that operated under the guise of a sanctuary. The pseudo-sanctuary was a hub for networkers in the Exotic Pet Trade to buy, sell, and trade exotic animals. The facility also profited from breeding, cub-petting and pay-to-play activities. It was closed down in 2016 in an effort spearheaded by Turpentine Creek Wildlife Refuge and Tigers in America, with help from multiple other accredited sanctuaries, many of which now make up the Big Cat Sanctuary Alliance.
The public elected the hunky, spunky, white tiger, Snowball, to rule as Tiger King. He raised a whopping $668 for the well and water system, thanks to those who voted for him. Snowball came from the same facility Khaleesi was rescued from. He was bred for use in cub-petting, meaning he was ripped from his mother when he was just days old to be held and bottle-fed for profit. Tigers used in cub-petting often die prematurely because they do not receive proper nutrition in their earliest stage of life. Not only do they fail to receive proper nutrition from their mother's, which includes immune-system-building antibodies important to thrive, but they are kept hungry by their captors so they will be more enthusiastic when patrons pay to bottle-feed them. The bottles typically contain watered-down milk or formula that does not provide the nutrients they need. Keeping tiger cubs from gaining weight is essential for this cruel industry to profit because once they reach 35 pounds, they can no longer legally be handled. Like Khaleesi, Snowball was rescued from the Colorado compound before he was forced into a life of breeding, sold or traded for further exploitation, or worse.
Shasta and Golden Tabby Tiger, Tigger, were runners-up in the competition. Though they were rescued at different times from different situations, Shasta and Tigger both hail from Oklahoma. Shasta was kept as a pet in a rural area. Her and the two other tigers that accompanied her back to the Refuge during the rescue, were sadly declawed by their previous owner. Declawing any feline is akin to amputating a human finger at the first joint. Thankfully, we are able to manage the effects of her declaw with medication. She remains a happy, healthy tiger with a ton of cattitude!
Tigger came to us in January from a closing facility in Oklahoma. The owner of the facility said Tigger came from yet another facility in the area. He had apparently been used for cub-petting and was set to be euthanized because he aged out of the program and could no longer earn money. Instead, the owner of the facility that eventually closed offered to take him and five other tigers in. All of the tigers from this rescue were obese and suffering from genetic health issues when they arrived at the Refuge. One tiger, Diesel, was suffering from pre-existing feline infectious anemia for several days before we arrived and later succumbed to the illness. Thankfully, the other tigers, including Tigger, never showed symptoms of the disease. Tigger has since gotten to a healthy weight and is known for his curiosity and playfulness. He isn't always the best at sharing toys with his habitat mate, Floyd, but the pair have a strong bond.
